橢圓星系多半是質量較小的螺旋星系(或其他星系)合併後的結果。
橢圓星系的確是第二星族較多，這是因為橢圓星系的形成可能在大霹靂結束後初期
就歷經長期的星系合併，留存至今的恆星自然是年紀大的小質量恆星。

由於歷經星系合併，故橢圓星系總質量多半遠大於螺旋星系。

但是大質量恆星往往是在活潑的螺旋星系很常見，橢圓星系的恆星形成趨緩，
雖然有少數橢圓星系可以觀察到疏散星團，但是會發生超新星爆炸的大質量恆星
則不多見。
